Young Voices Young Voices offers children the amazing opportunity of singing with the worlds’ largest children’s choir. The whole experience is a journey and discovery, culminating in the most extraordinary performance opportunity there could possibly be. South Hill Choir have attended Young Voices for the past years and most recently on 23rd January 2025. This year the music included a Marley Medley, a Dance Medley, A Hairspray Medley as well as anthems and pop songs from a huge variety of genres. These offer the children opportunities to learn about other times and cultures, as well as musical styles. We even became backing singers to Tommy Blaize in the song ‘Lean on Me’. The song ‘Try Everything’ has since become a school favourite as it links so well to our Resilience theme in the South Hill Way. The choir members worked extremely hard to learn all the lyrics and attended many extra rehearsals. All the hard work paid off with such an exceptional day on Thursday 23rd January. The day was long and exhausting but the children were utterly amazing. Their enthusiasm and energy bubbled over all day. Most of the songs had actions and dance moves so we were kept moving in the rehearsal as well as being introduced to the various artists who would be performing with us in the evening. As the lights went down for the concert to begin at 7pm the atmosphere was electric. Parents had arrived in the O2 and we could wave to them from a distance! The Urban Striders, Tommy Blaize, Souparnika Nair and MC Grammar were sensational. The pupils have been inspired to follow MC Grammar and especially enjoy watching him perform his World Book Day rap on YouTube! Such an incredible evening to inspire and remember! Here are some of the choir members’ comments: ‘Breathtaking’ ‘Extraordinary’ ‘It was just the best day’ ‘I loved the Urban Strides Dancers!’ My favourite Medley was Hairspray’ ‘I loved the lights- I felt like a star!’ ‘It was soo amazing’ Urban Strides are awesome! ‘Awesome’

Calendar DSSN Toamna 2020 School Games Long Term Plan Subject Overview Active Lives Survey Community clubs We are extremely lucky to be close to so many great sporting clubs, who are willing and able to support our pupils and teachers. We have benefited from the coaching skills of Berkhamsted Hockey club, Leverstock Green tennis club, Bytomic Taekwondo, Christina Marks School of Performing Arts and Hertfordshire Cricket. The children have also been inspired by a visit from Victoria Ohuruogu - an English track athlete who won silver at the Commonwealth Games last year! We also book workshops for the children that support their physical and mental wellbeing. Challenge Sport Education have provided us with these a number of times and have been greatly enjoyed by the children. Running track Our extensive school grounds, includes a running track which is used by every year group each day. The children are encouraged to run or walk around the 300-metre long track in their break times, but also as healthy active breaks during lesson time. Once a half term, our sports coach sets an extra challenge, where children compete against other classes to run or walk as many laps as possible in a week. We understand that active children are often happy children so Friday is Daily Mile Friday for family to join in too! The side gate opens at 8:20am each Friday for families to run with their children before school. Orienteering course Our grounds has an orienteering course, which enables us to make some of our other lessons in the curriculum more active. Children can regularly be seen running happily from zone to zone to solve historical, geographical, mathematical and English facts. Clubs We offer a range of clubs at our school. Design and Technology Design and Technology Vision To develop pupils' skills and technical knowledge in designing, making and evaluating through cooking and nutrition, textiles, materials and construction. We teach a broad and varied Design and Technology curriculum, at South Hill, which aims to develop skills and knowledge through the following key areas: Design: We want our pupils to generate ideas and to model and communicate these through talking and drawing. We want them to create templates and design products that are appealing, functional and purposeful. Make: We want pupils to select from a range of materials, tools and equipment and use these to perform practical tasks such as cutting, shaping, joining, sewing, kneading and finishing. Evaluate: We want pupils to be able to talk about existing products, as well as their finished product, to compare these against the design criteria and to consider the views of others to improve their work. Technical Knowledge: We want pupils to know and use subject specific vocabulary (such as levers, sliders, wheels, axels) and to deepen their knowledge of technical processes such as how structures can be made stronger/more stable. Golden Threads As part of our Design and Technology curriculum, we have carefully mapped out Golden Threads that weave in and out of our learning. These allow us to build on previous knowledge and skills and to ensure a progression of these year after year. Our Golden Threads for DT are: Our Curriculum In EYFS, through the Early Learning Goal ‘Expressive Arts and Design’, pupils are introduced to the building blocks of our Design and Technology curriculum. Through construction, pupils explore and build with a variety of materials such as Lego or wooden bricks, alongside developing their fine motor skills with scissors, paper and other media. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop an understanding of the design, making and evaluating process when creating their own products. Examples of topics covered in KS1 include: Designing a building for a town, making a pop up toy and making a fruit/vegetable monster. In Key Stage 2, pupils further embed the design, make and evaluate cycle when creating their own products. Examples of topics covered in KS1 include: building Anderson Shelters, making Torches, making a hydraulic bridge and cooking Viking bread. By the end of Year 6, we want pupils to be able to have developed the ability to design and make a range of products (in cooking and nutrition, textiles, materials and construction) and to be confident in their technical knowledge of these areas and to be able to evaluate their own work, as well of as that of others. The Angel That Nearly Missed It All Despite their best efforts, one forgetful angel is always late! They oversleep, their maps blows away, they go to the wrong hillside, they gets cramp in their wings, and they terrify the donkeys. Will this Late Angel eventually make it to meet Mary and Joseph, and help the rest of the Angel Chorus celebrate the most important event of all? A wonderful production by our key stage 1 pupils with lovely singing, dancing and acting. Thank you to all the KS1 team for the amazing job they have done on preparing Yrs 1&2 for this year’s Nativity. The children did an absolutely brilliant job. We feel fortunate to have a school which celebrates non-academic performances as highly as it feels like South Hill does and puts in huge amounts of effort to these endeavours, it is lovely they have the opportunity to work towards events such as these too. - Travel Plan | southhill
School Travel Plan Our School Travel Plan at South Hill Primary School aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle and positive well-being for all. We work closely with Herts Travel Team and we currently hold a “Good” Award for our Travel Plan. Some of the aims of the School Travel Plan include: Improved safety of pupils due to less traffic. Less congestion around the school and in the local community. Healthier, happier, more alert pupils, thanks to active travel such as, cycling and walking. Avoiding parking issues around the school ground Less pollution around the school and local area. Improved road awareness of pupils. Greater staff health and well-being. Improved journey reliability for staff, pupils and parents. As a school, we actively promote walking, using a scooter, park and ride or cycling as a way of getting to school each day. Additionally, during our Walk to School Week we again encourage and record how children get to school each day that week. This is a great opportunity to help children reach their minimum 60 minutes of exercise per day. At South Hill, we ask that no cars enter the school car park during drop off and collection. Parking is very restricted around the immediate school site. Please be considerate to our local residents if parking nearby to the school or consider parking and walking. Within the school grounds, we also have a scooter station to keep bikes and scooter dry from the weather! Tom, our school crossing officer regularly visits school Tom sends the following message to keep your children safe. 1) A reminder to stay on the footpath until Tom call you to cross, do not cross before. 2) Any children who bring bikes and scooters must get off and push them across the road. 3) Parents, for the safety of all PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON YELLOW LINES or close to the crossing patrol area. We thank Tom very much for helping to keep our pupils safe
- The South Hill Way | southhill
The South Hill Way At South Hill, we follow 'The South Hill Way', which forms part of our behaviour policy (following the Steps therapeutic behaviour approach). The 'SHW' is an important part of this and promotes our school values, 'The 4 R's'. These are linked to 'British Values' and underpin what it means to be both a pupil and an adult at South Hill. Theo in Year 3 says, “The South Hill Way are our 4 main school rules. They keep everyone safe and mean everyone is the same.” Ada in Year 1 says, “The South Hill Way helps us know what to do and means everyone is happy.” We want every pupil and every adult to embrace and display these values so that everyone can learn and achieve at our school because 'it's the South Hill Way.'
- ArtsMark Gold | southhill
Artsmark Gold Award 'You clearly value the Arts and recognise their contribution to your mission statement of 'Building Character, Learning Together' at South Hill Primary School. You have used your Artsmark journey to develop children's understanding of arts and artists from a wider variety of different cultural heritages, so that cultural diversity is being promoted through your arts curriculum and your annual International Day. Music is a growing strength within your overall arts offer with lessons provided by a specialist music teacher. Your partnership with Hertfordshire Music Service is providing opportunities for children in Key Stage 2 to participate in instrumental tuition, including ukulele and Djembe drumming. Pupils can also participate in Choir extra-curricular club and have opportunities to showcase and celebrate their musical achievements locally and at national events, such as at Young Voices. Astutely, you have capitalised on the skills and expertise of various school stakeholders, including a parent who is an animator. This opportunity, along with the chance for children to see a range of artists and makers at work at the Dacorum Arts Centre, has enabled pupils to develop an understanding of carer pathways and job opportunities in the Arts. Teachers' confidence has increased as a result of their training from local secondary colleagues in drawing, watercolour and collagraph printing. Congratulations on completing your Artsmark journey. We are delighted to inform you that your setting has been awarded an Artsmark Gold Award! Award. Congratulations! ' Artsmark Arts Council England
