The Wellbeing Festival 2023 For our incredible Wellbeing Festival 2023 this year, South Hill School choir led by Mrs Toms our very own Music Specialist accompanied by the whole school sang two amazing songs which were incorporated as part of the “Sing up Day” celebrations 2023. The first song entitled “Let love shine through” celebrates the uniqueness and diversity of our local and global communities. The second track ‘Blossom Out’ by Tomuri Spicer is one of three new songs written for Sing up Day 2023. It is a gentle, laid back and summery celebration of the earth and our connection to the natural world around us. It features taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) and snippets of haka (traditional chant in the Māori language) and is based on whakataukī (Māori proverbs). Tomuri’s clever lyrics encourage us to recognise our individual strengths, gifts, and uniqueness to ‘blossom out like a flower’ and ‘stand strong like a forest’. The children also enjoyed the day with their peers and siblings and listened, danced and sang to some incredible tunes played by the incredible Mr Braithwaite. What a truly fabulous occasion for the staff and pupils of South Hill School. Once again a huge thank you goes out to Mr Braithwaite and Mrs Toms for being such a strength to our school and always incorporating the South Hill spirit into every occasion. Our Curriculum At South Hill School, our curriculum allows our pupils to flourish through a nurturing environment, which aims to build confident and resilient learners and provide the building blocks of learning in all subjects, in preparation for their next steps across our school and to secondary school. Our Curriculum Intent The intent of our school curriculum is clearly planned and developed using a progressive approach with a build-up of learning, knowledge and skills. This is m apped out from year group to year group, and across key stages, via our ‘subject long term planning documents’ and ‘year group curriculum overviews’, which follow the National Curriculum. These can be found on each of our subject web pages (‘Curriculum’ tab) and on our year group class pages. We have aimed to design an ambitious curriculum which is designed for the pupils at our school and a curriculum that is relevant and meaningful. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​​ The core of our curriculum is based on developing pupils' Reading, Writing and Maths skills and providing a rich, diverse learning experience. We focus on a strong 'daily diet' of learning for all pupils. Our Reading curriculum follows the Read Write Inc scheme to teach phonics and reading skills in a consistent manner. Matching phonetical books further support the acquirement of phonics (also known as the ‘3Ps’ at South Hill School). ​ ​ We use the ‘Herts for Learning’ (HFL) documents for our Core Subjects and we have adapted the 'Learning Challenge Curriculum' ('Weave') for our Foundation Subjects. This ensures that all our pupils are taught a broad and balanced curriculum, with the key skills and knowledge to support their future learning to ensure all pupils have the opportunity to reach their potential. Our SEN pupils access learning at an adapted level dependent on individual needs. Some children have a personalised curriculum which is tailored but based around whole class learning wherever possible and also follows their individualised 'Passport to Success'. Accessibility across our school can be seen via our whole school provision maps based on the four broad areas of need and our EAL provision map. ​ Cognition and Learning Needs Physical and Sensory Needs Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs Speech, Language and Communication Needs English as an Additional Language (EAL) ​ Underpinning our intended curriculum and deeply rooted in our ethos is the wellbeing of our pupils. For our pupils to access the curriculum, they must be in a nurturing and supporting environment with a rich cultural capital. Our curriculum celebrates a broad and enriched learning approach. Events such as 'International Day', led by the Geography lead, is a celebration of language, foods, music, different cultures and dances from across the world. Our Science Day, our Wellbeing days and our annual Art Gallery are other examples in which leaders join together to ensure our pupils' learning is extended beyond the classroom and their experiences are widened. Οικολογικοί πολεμιστές Καλώς ήλθατε στην ιστοσελίδα μας Eco Warrior! Σε αυτήν τη σελίδα, θα σας ενημερώσουμε σχετικά με τη δουλειά που κάνουμε και πώς ενθαρρύνουμε το υπόλοιπο σχολείο να γίνει πιο φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον. Έχουμε ήδη κερδίσει το βραβείο Silver και τώρα εργαζόμαστε για το βραβείο Gold. Το να είμαστε Eco Warrior δίνει στους μαθητές μας την ευκαιρία να βοηθήσουν το σχολείο μας να γίνει πιο φιλικό προς το περιβάλλον. Έχουμε Eco Warriors τόσο στο KS1 όσο και στο KS2 και θέλουν να προωθήσουν φιλικές προς το περιβάλλον ιδέες και εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας σε ολόκληρο το σχολείο παρακολουθώντας τη χρήση ενέργειας στο σχολείο και ενθαρρύνοντας τους δασκάλους και τους μαθητές να ανακυκλώσουν. Κάθε μαθητής μπορεί να γίνει Eco Warrior στο South Hill School. Τον Σεπτέμβριο, ζητάμε από όσους ενδιαφέρονται να υποβάλουν αίτηση (μπορεί να είναι αφίσα, ποίημα ή μοντέλο κ.λπ.). Αθλητισμός στο South Hill Τα παιδιά είναι South Hill παρέχονται πολλές αθλητικές ευκαιρίες τόσο στο πρόγραμμα σπουδών όσο και ως σύλλογοι μετά το σχολείο. Εάν ενδιαφέρεστε να μάθετε περισσότερα για τους αθλητικούς συλλόγους που προσφέρουμε, μιλήστε με τον κ. Brathwaite ή την κ. Cogger. Ποδόσφαιρο Η εκπαίδευση ποδοσφαίρου των ετών 5 και 6 πραγματοποιείται την Πέμπτη μετά το σχολείο και τα έτη 3 και 4 την Παρασκευή μετά το σχολείο με τους δύο πρώτους όρους. Κατά τη θερινή περίοδο, το ποδοσφαιρικό κλαμπ είναι ανοιχτό για τα Έτη 3 έως 6 και πραγματοποιείται την Πέμπτη μετά το σχολείο. Η κα Barnes διευθύνει ένα ποδοσφαιρικό κλαμπ για κορίτσια μόνο την Παρασκευή μετά το σχολείο, δηλαδή για τα έτη 3-6. Δικτυοσφαίρα Το κλαμπ Netball λειτουργεί κάθε Δευτέρα μετά το σχολείο με επικεφαλής τον κ. Brathwaite και την κ. Cogger. Είναι ανοιχτό σε όλα τα παιδιά του έτους 4/5/6. Η ομάδα εργάζεται σκληρά για να αναπτύξει τις δεξιότητές τους. Τα παιδιά μαθαίνουν επίσης τους κανόνες του παιχνιδιού για την προετοιμασία για μια πολυάσχολη χρονιά αγώνων. Early Years Foundation Stage Early Years Vision ​ Children in Early Years are valued as unique individuals. The stimulating environment is enhanced to reflect their interests. Our Early Years provision develops the building blocks in learning in preparation for Year 1. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is how the Government and Early Years professionals describe the educational stage in your child’s life between birth and the age of five. Reception is the final year of this stage. This is a very important stage as it helps your child get ready for the next stage of school as well as preparing them for future learning and successes. ​ There are four guiding principles which shape practice in the Early Years at South Hill. These are: • Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured • Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships • Children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers. • Children develop and learn at different rates. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). ​ The three prime areas are most essential for building your child’s capacity for learning and ensuring that they are able to thrive. These are: Communication and language Physical development Personal, social and emotional development Succeeding within the prime areas will help children to develop skills in four specific areas. These are: Literacy Mathematics Understanding the world Expressive arts and design Communication and Language: involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Physical Development: involves providing opportunities for children to be active and interactive and develop their co-ordination, control and movement. Children are supported to understand the importance of being active and making healthy choices in relation to food. Personal, Social and Emotional Development: involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others. Children learn social skills and how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups and to have confidence in their own abilities. Literacy: involves encouraging children to link sound and letters and to begin to learn to read and write. Children are given opportunities to explore a wide range of reading materials to ignite their interests. Mathematics: involves providing children opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems and using mathematical language involving shape, space and measures. Understanding the World: involves supporting children to make sense of the world in which they live and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. Expressive Arts and Design: involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role play and design and technology. Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through the seven areas of learning. The Angel That Nearly Missed It All Despite their best efforts, one forgetful angel is always late! They oversleep, their maps blows away, they go to the wrong hillside, they gets cramp in their wings, and they terrify the donkeys. Will this Late Angel eventually make it to meet Mary and Joseph, and help the rest of the Angel Chorus celebrate the most important event of all? ​ A wonderful production by our key stage 1 pupils with lovely singing, dancing and acting. Thank you to all the KS1 team for the amazing job they have done on preparing Yrs 1&2 for this year’s Nativity. The children did an absolutely brilliant job. We feel fortunate to have a school which celebrates non-academic performances as highly as it feels like South Hill does and puts in huge amounts of effort to these endeavours, it is lovely they have the opportunity to work towards events such as these too. Forest School ‘Forest School’ is a Scandinavian concept where the learning is outdoor based. Many forest school activities evolve from the children’s interests, ideas, and the natural resources found in our grounds. ​ The outdoor sessions promote confidence, self-esteem and independence. At South Hill, we are passionate about developing the whole child and in using our amazing grounds to enhance learning. Benefits of forest school sessions include increased confidence, improved behaviour, improved concentration, independence, and development of social, emotional and physical skills. ​ Forest school is all about exploring and experiencing the natural world through practical activities. The children go outside in all weathers, exploring and learning from the seasons and environment changes. Natural resources stimulate creative thinking, problem solving and skill development, all in the guise of play. The children also learn to care for the environment and appreciate the seasonal changes, developing an empathy for wildlife. ​ Most importantly, alongside the learning, the children have fun! ​ We are delighted to be able to offer every child at South Hill the chance to participate in Forest School during the academic year.
